Buenos Aires, Argentina is the most fashionable city in Latin America. It has a European feel and many claim it is actually more European than anywhere in Europe. This is a list of the cities top 5 attractions that all visitors should not miss.
1. Plaza de Mayo – This is the very heart of B.A. The square is home to Casa de Gobierno (aka Casa Rosada because of its pink tones), the Museo de los Presidentes, the Antiguo Congresso Nacional (Old Congress; a national monument), and the Cathedral (which dates back to 1753). Every Thursday at 3:30pm (15:30) the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo march in remembrance of the children that lost their lives during the “dirty war.”
2. Cemetery of the Recoleta and Museo de Bellas Artes – The large graveyard is built like a miniature city, with small streets and alleyways separating the architecturally stunning tombs and mausoleums of some of the country’s most famous citizens including Evita Perón. The Museo, or National Gallery is home to the finest works of Argentine and European Art in the country and is located not far from the cemetery.
3. San Telmo – This district is home to the postcard perfect Colonial and Rosista buildings and atmospheric neighborhood scenes with galleries, cafes, and antique shops. San Telmo is probably not the first site on your list, but it will likely be your favorite place in B.A.
4. Tango Shows – They are mostly overpriced and often overly touristy, but you just have to go. Street touts are everywhere attempting to lure you in, but try the Tango information desk at Centro Cultural San Martín.
5. Museo de la Pasion Boquense – This is the museum dedicated to the soccer/fútbol team Boca Juniors, the country’s favorite and a point of national pride to many. If you are looking to get crazy, head down to the La Bombenera stadium where the team plays every other Sunday. If you can get tickets that is.
