The top 5 sites within the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Launching pad for the Galapgos islands, Guayaquil makes an interesting trip on its own. Here are five of the best things to do. Malecon 2000 - When I'm in Guayaquil, this is likely where you will find me. The boardwalk that follows the Rio Guayas and eventually runs into the Pacific is very modern and hosts a number of sites. There are malls, restaurants, bars, markets, crafts, shops, gardens, fountains, and monuments all with a nice view and gentle breeze. It passes the Palacio Municipal, the Government palace, the Museo Arqueological, and a number of other interesting buildings. Las Peñas, - This neighborhood is a remnant of the colonial Guayaquil of old. Aged, wooden, houses are brightly painted. Cobblestone streets have a bohemian feel and are lined with galleries, restaurants, bars, and the occasional festival takes place here. The Cemetary - Below Cerro El Carmen and north of the Parque Centenario is a huge cemetery with many interesting graves. Most were built for the rich and their families and are made up of towering tombs and mausoleums. Parque Bolivar - This would include not just the pleasant, shady park, but also several nearby buildings including the gothic Cathedral and the Museo Municipal. Alos of note are the many iguanas that inhabit the parks trees. They have given the park the nickname, Parque de las Iguanas. Mall del Sol - Near the airport, this mall is the largest in all of Ecuador. It is more North American in style than most area malls and has 250 stores, many restaurants, nine movie screens, and the occasional disco.
