The Iguazu Falls are one of the natural wonders of the world and are one of the most spectacular sights on the continent.

The Iguazu Falls on the border of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, are one of the premier tourist desginations of the South American continent.

Meaning great water in the native dialect of Guaraní, the falls were named a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1984. The 275 individual cascades stretch more than two miles long and are also taller than those at Niagara. On average, 1500 cubic meters of water pour from the falls every second.

The Iguazu Falls form a thunderous semi- circle that make it one of the most impressive border areas in any part of the world. Tours are arranged from many points in all three countries that border it and each side tries to stake its claim as the superior nation with flags and other points of national pride scattered along the edges.

A feature sight, the Devil's Throat, or Garganta del Diablo, is best seen from the Brazilian side. Here fourteen falls crash more than 350 feet to the surface below, creating a cloud of mist that rises high into the air often leading to numerous rainbows that are a photographer's heaven. Popular are the Full Moon walks to this cascade that are only offered a few nights each month.

Other opportunities abound to explore the lush surroundings that exist across each of the borders near the falls. Amazonian plants and wildlife are best seen in several of the national parks that sit near the falls. Many tours to the falls include stops at these places so you can get the full experience of the region.

Also of note and possible to tour, is the Itaipu dam and hydroelectric plant that provides a significant amount of power to the surrounding countries. The dam, one of the largest in the world, was only built a little more than a decade ago.
