Insight Guides: South America is a photo heavy, fact laden, well balanced introduction to background information on the South American continent.
Title: Insight Guide South America (2006) Intro: In conjunction with the Discovery Channel, Insight Guides have created a guidebook that passes up all of the information on hotels and restaurants for tons of photos and Highlights: -Very image heavy. Every page has several photos on it by excellent photographers and there are dozens of full page or double page photos throuyghout the book. -Graphic heavy as well. The graphics are bright and lively and you are never lost as to where you are. -The stories in each chapter stray from the typical. For instance, there are long pieces on The Gaucho, Carnaval, Gold, Beef, Wine Country, etc. The stories give you a different angle to most other guides and provide a plethora of extra reding material.
-Reader friendly and is time well spent even if you aren't visiting the continent.
-Several pages of photos of naked Brazilian women
Negatives:
-Hardly any information on hotels and restaurants and what is there is only for the largest cities. -Very little how-to information on directions, transportation, etc. -Very few city maps to at least give you an idea of where things are located. Authors: The book is updated by different contributing writers in each edition, many of them, so there isn't really one lead author. Jane Eddington updated the edition and does a great job of making each section flow together. Each country chapter was written by a different author, so the collection of stories and styles vary, however, most are well written. Other: Short yet informative travel tips are scattered throughout pages of the book. For instance, "Bahian cooking is considerably more spicy than elsewhere in Brazil, and generous amount of coconut oil are used..." And so on.
