Brazilian horror flick

Turistas, Turistas
Turistas is a new backpacker flick in the vein of Hostel and the Beach set in Brazil. It's a horror flick though, and not very likely to get you to pick up your pack.

Turistas movie is a cross between Hostel and The Beach. It combines the backpacker elements of both movies with the twisted horror of Hostel.

Tales of rich white people (aka gringos) stealing organs from third world countries have been widespread for many years. This story turns the tables as a Rio doctor abducts backpackers to steal their organs for a poor hospital.

Basic plot: Three Americans go to Brazil. Their long bus ride north has a premature stop when the bus overturns and flips over a cliff, just after all passengers climb out safely. The three Americans meet two Brits and an Aussie girl. All wander down to the beach and find a paradise like bar with lots of young people who like to drink, have sex, etc. they decide to stay awhile. Everyone is drugged and robbed. They go to look for help and cause a bit of trouble in a small town en route. Looking to escape any further dilemmas they are lead by a friendly Brazilian (so they think) into the jungle and past waterfalls and caves to his uncle’s house. When the ‘uncle’ comes home that’s when all of the fun starts. I’ll stop there, but I’m sure you can guess what happens next.

I’m sure this is the last sort of thing that Brazil’s tourist board did not want, as much of the country already has a rough image. From a travel standpoint the country fairs very bad and also very good. The beaches, the women, the care free attitude, the music, the adventure, and lush tropical environment all are favorable. The roads, most of the people, the safety issues do not fare so well.

Would I recommend seeing Turistas? It’s not bad, but it was empty in quite a few places. I’d wait on the Turistas DVD.

By the way, if anyone anywhere ever tells you to go with them to their uncle’s house in Brazil: don’t.
