» Amanda Kendle - Dangers in Caracas?

Hi Nicholas, sorry to have a negative question, but a couple of years ago I planned a trip to S America (unfortunately never got to take it!) and the flight route meant a stopover in Caracas. When I read about it, it sounded risky enough that I planned to get out to the coast or an island straight away - and usually I'm not a scared traveler. What kind of problems do you have to look out for there?
cheers

Thanks for writing Amanda. Caracas is safe as long as you use your head.Don't walk around at night. Take taxis and guides that your hotel recomends, not people that aproach you in the street. Travel in groups. Stick to the major tourist circuits. Dress down. If you follow these rules you should be fine. Much of the crime is petty theft and limited to just a few areas, mostly in the center, but there is always a chance that a curious traveler will wander into them. Just be prepared and you will probably not have a problem. The coast is much more laid back, but the same precautions should be taken.

There are dangers at the airport as well. I'm going to address those in next weeks article.
